Bill Grants bodybuilding career spans over 4 decades! Nicknamed the
man of steel, Bill Grant was also Arnold Schwarzeneggers training
partner back in the day, also known as the golden age of
bodybuilding. Bill Grant is more than just a bodybuilder he is also
a savvy businessman with his line of Bill Grant nutrition products
and Old School training DVD’s. Some how, Bill still makes time to
speak to people both young & old about proper form, training
techniques and diet. He’s an articulate, energetic, well-spoken man
with a big heart.
I first met bodybuilder Bill Grant back in 1978 at the Night of
Champions contest held in New York City. From the minute I entered
the lobby of the Beacon Theater, there they were, all my idols of
the time, Robby Robinson, Mike Mentzer, master poser Ed Corney,
Danny Padilla, Boyer Coe and Bill Grant. I found myself drawn closer
to these Gods of Gold’s Gym! Seeing them in the pages of Weiders
Muscle Builder Magazine was one thing, but seeing them in person,
that was a real trip! The first thing I noticed was that these guys
looked much bigger & taller in the muscle magazines. In person,
these guy’s were ripped and it was clear as day, most of my
bodybuilding idols were barely 200lbs. But here they were, all
wearing their plain unassuming jogging suits, zipped all the way up
so that you couldn’t get a glimpse of what was in stored for you at
the pre-judging or the evening show. But the one thing you could see
were the veins in their hands and forearms, the striations in their
upper pecs and their chiseled facial features, these guy’s had
tissue thin skin. Out of my haze, suddenly, the atmosphere changed
it became like a scene at the local carnival with all my Ironhead
idols yelling like those carnival barkers trying to shame you into
spending your last dollar trying to win a stuffed teddy bear by
throwing baseballs at lead weighted milk cans! Especially Ed Corney,
he was the only bodybuilder that charged money for an autograph. I
guess that Pumping Iron book cover went to his head. I was shocked;
this guy wants to charge me $20 bucks for his signature. I said to
myself, hey I gotta eat too! Besides this was Ed Corney the master
poser but Tad’s Steakhouse got my money that day!
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed another one of my Gold’s Gym
idols laughing at all the banter going on in the lobby, it was the
Man of Steel himself Mr. America & Mr. World winner bodybuilder Bill
Grant. Suddenly I heard “hey kid, you with the calves, I’ll give you
an autograph!” Not only did Bill sign my program, he took the time
to give training & nutrition tips while spending a little time with
a kid from the suburbs who wanted to be a pro bodybuilder one day. I
never forgot that day!
